About Us

Reeds Asylum Association

I started the business after noticing how many children do not participate in after-school activities that provide structure, are educational, and aid in their social development. Our organization is different as it carries out prevention measures and drug awareness, whereas many other organizations are directed towards rehabilitation. Furthermore, we attend different schools weekly and carry out presentations and do testimonials as part of our Prevention-outreach. We also provide weekly sessions where we transport the youth to our home in Grabouw, provide them with a meal, and engage in leadership initiatives and biblical studies.

What does Reeds Asylum Association do in the community? Well simple actually…

Our children and youth join us twice a week for a regular Bible study session (Thursdays and Sundays). The youth partake in Community involvement (visiting Old Age Homes, handing out food parcels to those less fortunate than themselves, evangelism amongst those children who do not belong to an organisation, learning social development; as well as getting opportunities to grow in teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership. We also visit schools (both Primary and Secondary Schools within Grabouw on a fixed program) every Friday with a Drug Awareness Team, creating awareness of the dangers of Substance Use. We work very closely with Department of Social Development and the local Social Support (ABBA) to identify and report Youth that needs rehabilitation on Substance use. We also involve Corporate Companies and strive towards Job-skill development by allowing youth to partake in job-shadow programs, and assisting them in their applications for internships/permanent placement.

How does Reeds Asylum Association go about in the Community?

The leaders and volunteers of Reeds Asylum Association go into the streets of Grabouw and physically approach those youth and children sitting on the corners of the streets, standing at spaza shops and roaming around without direction and invite them to be part of a Christian-based family. As a team, we then tackle the internal and external obstacles these children and youth face, by guiding them weekly on a set program. We strive towards, and by God’s grace, help them redeem their lives. The pre-planned activities and workshops that we have with the youth are aimed to development their social skills, giving them a sense of purpose, helping them to understand their role within their community, and practical assistance to change the trajectory of their lives. We are listed on the Directory of the Municipality and are acknowledged as an Organisation that is positively contributing to the development of our youth within the community.

How does Reeds Asylum Association select their beneficiaries?

The program is designed for youth up to the age of 35, with a specific focus on those who do not have any affiliation and unemployed youth. Through this approach we encourage the youth to not sit at home, to not walk the streets, but to equip themselves for a future that holds possibilities.
